Why the arowana?

In Chinese communities from Singapore and Malaysia to Hong Kong and Taiwan, the arowana is known as the dragon fish: a living charm for wealth and good fortune, often kept in hotel and restaurant lobbies. A painting brings the same wish to your wall, without the tank.

Gold, the colour of fortune

Gold stands for the precious, the noble and the abundant, which is why the golden arowana is the most prized of its kind.

A dragon in the water

Its large scales and barbels recall the Chinese dragon, and it carries a dragon's authority: status, prosperity and balance between heaven and earth.

A guardian of fortune

Popular belief holds that the fish turns misfortune away, even taking it on in its owner's place. In a painting, that protection hangs quietly on the wall.

How many fish?

Each number carries a wish. Tell us yours and we choose the number of fish when we paint.

    Companions in the painting

Symbolism follows Chinese tradition, popular belief and the artist's own notes. A painting is a work of art, not a guarantee of any outcome.

    Xue Jiuzhou

Born in Liaoning in 1964 and trained at the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, Xue Jiuzhou is a first-class artist and a pioneer of the arowana as a subject in Chinese painting.

He developed a freehand "boneless" ink technique for the arowana: broad dry-brush texture for scales and sinew, wet washes for movement and light. His fish are painted large, with the force of a dragon.

Born from flowers, birds, fish and insects, yet moving beyond them: to keep innovating is the work of a lifetime.
